製作総指揮がコッポラとルーカスで、1985年度カンヌ国際映画祭最優秀芸術貢献賞を受賞しているのに、日本では諸事情により「封印作品」。
三島由紀夫の人生を、『金閣寺』『鏡子の家』『奔馬』（『豊饒の海』第二部）の三つの三島文学を映像化したものと、ドキュメンタリー調の再現映像を加えた四部構成によって描かれている。
緒形拳が三島の役を熱演し、1970年11月25日に起きた陸上自衛隊市ヶ谷駐屯地での籠城事件・自衛隊決起を促す演説・割腹自殺までを演じた。（ウィキペディア）

日本で公開できないのは、三島の遺族が「男色」描写に難色を示したからとか某政治家から圧力がかかったからとか色々と言われているが真相は藪の中。
でも、「封印」されているから、なにか「危ない映画」のように思われているが、実際に見てみるといたって「普通」のアート映画。
新しいジャケットのアートワークは横尾忠則なのか（役者として出演もしているし）。
なにか曰くありげな旧盤。同じ作品なのにまったくイメージが違う。
